Background of the Study

Mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions, are increasingly prevalent among university students due to academic pressure, social expectations, and financial constraints (WHO, 2024). Despite growing recognition of mental health issues, stigma and misconceptions continue to hinder help-seeking behavior and effective management (Adebayo & Salami, 2024).

Mental health literacy involves understanding mental disorders, recognizing symptoms, and knowing where to seek help. In Taraba State, efforts to promote mental health awareness have been made through university counseling services and student-led initiatives. However, the extent to which these programs have improved mental health literacy and reduced stigma remains unclear (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Despite increasing mental health challenges among university students, stigma remains a major barrier to seeking professional help in Taraba State. Many students lack accurate information about mental health, leading to negative perceptions and reluctance to seek counseling services (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

This study evaluates the impact of mental health literacy initiatives on reducing stigma and improving help-seeking behavior among university students in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of mental health literacy among university students in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of mental health education on stigma reduction.
  3. To identify barriers to mental health awareness and help-seeking behavior.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of mental health literacy among university students in Taraba State?
  2. How effective is mental health education in reducing stigma?
  3. What are the challenges affecting mental health awareness and help-seeking behavior?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Mental health literacy has no significant impact on stigma reduction.
  2. There is no significant relationship between mental health education and help-seeking behavior.
  3. Barriers to mental health awareness do not significantly affect students' attitudes toward seeking help.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on university students in Taraba State, evaluating their understanding of mental health and attitudes toward stigma. Limitations include variations in personal experiences and access to mental health services.

Definitions of Terms

  • Mental Health Literacy: The ability to recognize, understand, and seek help for mental health conditions.
  • Stigma: Negative attitudes and beliefs about individuals with mental illnesses.
